Colorectal cancers are slow-growing and affect the lower part of the digestive system, which includes the large intestine and rectum. Nearly 2,000 Singaporeans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year, and it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. People of Chinese descent have a higher likelihood of developing the condition.

Other risk factors include advanced age, an inactive lifestyle, and existing colorectal conditions such as colitis. Since colorectal cancers are caused by benign polyps, or growths, that turn cancerous, screening is key to early diagnosis. Singaporeans over the age of 50 with average risk factors are advised to undergo a colonoscopy once every 5 to 10 years. Those with a family or personal history of polyps should begin regular screenings earlier and more frequently. People with some types of inflammatory bowel diseases should be assessed annually.
